How To Be Successful At Work?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I understand that my question title is very general but after reading my post in detail - i hope it becomes clear further.

I work for a very well known, fortune 500 company. Both pay and the work culture around is good. I work in a pretty big sales dept and was hired as an analyst. I'm an mba and have about 3 years of experience including internships.

For this job, I was interviewed by 6 people for almost 8 hours and it was surely a very intense one. So when I was hired, I was kind of proud of my achievement. However, ever since I've joined this job (about 8 months now) I'm always nervous and unhappy. I faced several events where I felt that my manager was biased and didn't like me much. Later on, he also told me that he didn't like my work. I felt that he expected way too much from a new hire. But I tried my best. I was put on a project which required immense info on company processes, knowledge of people etc. Whenever I would go to him with questions, he would say I don't know the answer and that's ehy I've hired you. He told me that I wasn't an 'infuencer'.

Anyway, now I've a new group (we have had several re-organizations in last few months) and have a new manager. I think she likes my work - not sure yet as I'm quite new. However, this new group does things which I'm not very interested in. Apart from working on one interesting project, In do things like creating online surveys or setting up webinars for directors. I don't mind doing these things but I feel I wasn't hired for these things. Also, other folks who were hired with me, I feel, work on much better stuff and have way higher visibility in the organization.

可以有很明显他很多事情re. I don't want to make this very long. But I want to understand if it's me , that is if I'm not capable of doing things here then I should be worried and either ramp up or change my job. I'm not sure if this is an 'image' issue and if yes then how I can change my image or position around?
I'm obviously very new to large, matrix organizations and trying hard to figure my way around.

Would appreciate any insights from experienced folks around here..thanks!

I agree with Karen, and I'll also add to the conversation. A great way to get promoted into doing more interesting projects is to: first, show that you can handle what they've given you with a high level of excellence. Then, take on more work above and beyond what you've been asked to do. I'm not suggesting you step on any toes there by taking over someone else's responsibilities -- but generally, people would be happy to have help on their projects, if you can add value. Then, you will have concrete achievements to show your boss, and prove that you're capable enough to handle more complex projects. It's your responsibility to prove your abilities to your boss, and you can't do that by telling her - you've got to show her.

Also, I recommend learning and keeping current with forums like this. BNET (bnet.com I think) has some pretty good general business tips. The more you learn, the better equipped you are to wow your team. Best of luck!

    Hi Zeba!

I hope you're having a great day but more importantly a GREAT LIFE!

Zeba first let me encourage you. You've had a very challenging experience all together and your inexperience makes it very, very, very, very difficult for you to know what is ACCEPTABLE EXPECTATIONS and also what is EXPECTED EXPECTATIONS.

WHAT ARE ACCEPTABLE EXPECTATIONS: They are the things that we should expect to be acceptable. They are the things that we have determined are the standards for how others should deal with us.

BUT YOU'RE UNCLEAR AND THAT MAKES FOR MURKY WATERS...
Often times MOST PEOPLE are UNCLEAR about "Who THEY Are". We ALLOW others to treat us anyway they choose all in the name of ---GETTING AHEAD---Well if no ones told you yet getting ahead doesn't always feel good BUT it should never make us at odds with how we feel about ourselves internally.

YOU'RE OFF THE TRACK OF YOUR CALLING...SO GET BACK ON!
Reading your post I can hear your spirit speaking loud and clear and you're disengaged with who you are. Because when you know who you are and you come across people who don't understand your purpose in life you re-educate them to get them on board with how you see the process. If this doesn't work and you can't handle the fire then it's time for you to GET OUT THE KITCHEN.

YOU'RE HURTING FOR TWO REASONS AND THESE THINGS WILL IMPACT YOUR CAREER...
    You're hurting for two reasons.

1.) There are certain things we do not accept as human beings and most of us Bow to being politically correct over being correct. We allow people to speak words that wound our souls without retraining them on how we expect them to speak to us.

2.) You're hurting because people are not encouraging you at the level of your expectation and you're expecting people to feed you at a level that is emotionally satisfying to you but they don't KNOW YOU.

ONE OF THE GREATEST SECRETS OF ALL TIMES...
Live more PASSIONATELY, Live more DETERMINED, Live more COMITTED and then expect nothing from anyone that you can not provide for yourself...If you lived more passionately and focused more of your time giving people the encouragement and attention you expect it would by the "LAW of EXPECTATION" return back to you in many GREAT ways.

BUT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS YOU'VE GOT TO DO...

THE SECOND GREATEST SECRET OF ALL TIME...
You've got to choose the specific area of work you know you have been designed to perform at. There is a side of our nature, our character and even our personality that lends itself better to some types of work more than others. This can be changed as well but only to the degree that one can humble themselves, quiet their spirit, accept the pain of adjustment and then move on BOLDLY toward >>>>their DREAMS. If you're not ready to do this expect to suffer and never come to the apex of your greatest ability.

Many poor unfortunate souls in this age are going to be challenged by one small thing, after another small thing, after something large that's going to make all the difference in destroying their weaknesses or building up their strengths...So learn to manage yourself well and appreciate CHANGE.

IF YOU CAN'T ADJUST YOU WON'T SURVIVE. Learn to accept change as the vehicle that gets you where you want to be. Let it drive you to learn more about yourself, let it drive you to learn more about others, let it drive you to learn more about the work you believe you were born to do and finally let it drive you toward GREATNESS!!!

    MOST PEOPLE MAKE THIS MISTAKE...
They work hard to get hired and go through 6-8 interviews only to find out that their employeer is not clear on what the expectation is. Are you surprised? Surprised that others don't know where you should be going. Well they don't even know where there supposed to be going.

    YOUR FIRST MISTAKE WAS expecting...
Expecting others to know what really matters to you, expecting others to know what's important to you and expecting others to cater to your needs.

但是同样糟糕的大多数人没有一个线索what they really want to do. We PICK CAREERS that DON"T PICK US. I.E. we're not choosing the specific type of work that fits our EMOTIONAL state. We choose work that fits our Intelligent Quotient but not the work that fits our EMOTIONAL Quotient. The emotions are linked up with the soul of a person and this is where our true heart cries out.

Zeba> Later on, he also told me that he didn't like my work.

    Deremiah, *CPE> So What!

Zeba> He told me that I wasn't an 'infuencer'.

    Deremiah, *CPE> So What!

Zeba> Also, other folks who were hired with me, I feel, work on much better stuff and have way higher visibility in the organization.

Deremiah, *CPE> It's your job to serve your company in such a way that people hunger for the type of influence, passion and excitement that you bring to a project. This part is your fault. This is where you have to take responsibility to "MAKE THINGS HAPPEN" rather than blame others who are evidently serving the organization in a way that they get recognized. When Michael Jordan played for the Chicago Bulls he never worried about the visibility others got. He served his customer (The Chicago Fans) in such a way that the people demanded MJ. So WHERE ARE YOUR RAVING FANS? HOW ARE YOU SERVING YOUR CUSTOMER IN SUCH A WAY THAT THEIR CRAVING YOUR WORK AND DEMANDING YOUR PRESENCE. Sorry, this is an area where you can make the ultimate difference.

***CUSTOMERS DEMAND THOSE THAT SERVE THEM WITH PASSION***

So what are you going to do about it?

In your company those who are getting the better opportunities are being ---DEMANDED--- by their Internal Customers. It's time YOU started getting noticed, it's time they started "DEMANDING YOU"...So what are you going to do about it? How are you going to increase your stock and raise your value in the marketplace.

THIS is one reason why affirmitive action can never work...BECAUSE people have to EARN what they get. NOBODIES, going to pay anybody that's not EARNING THEIR KEEP!

Zeba>I'm not sure if this is an 'image' issue and if yes then how I can change my image or position around?

THE WAY PEOPLE SEE YOU IS AN IMAGE ISSUE IF IT'S NOT WORKING FOR YOU?

Here's how you change your image around to work in your favor...This is how I did it. And if a poor kid out of one of the nastiest Chicago projects can do it...I'm sure you can.

1.) RULE #1: SERVE YOUR CUSTOMER WITH PASSION AND SERVE YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS!

2.) RULE #2: MAKE SURE YOU'RE ALWAYS FOLLOWING RULE #1.

REMEMBER... our only real problem in life is our failure to be "MORE Creative" than we’ve ever been. If you “Invent” your opportunity YOU WILL most definitely create your future. I'm only an email away from you if you need my help. Is there anything else I can do for you?

    Zeba,

Karen's offered a great little bit of advice.

Again it was Shakespeare who said something like "To thine own self be true, it must be as the night followeth the day, Thou can not be false to any other man".

At all cost be yourself because it is much better than being a poor imitation of others. I'm aware that some people do not appreciate my style and I'm perfectly okay with that. If I lived to satisfy those few I woud be trying to be what they wanted me to be and that would mean that I would be less of myself.

But while you should Be yourself, "Be prepared to grow from your own mistakes...MIS-TAKES are Takes that you've missed taking. When you reach for an objective and you miss grabbing it that's a ***Mis-take***. And mistakes are perfectly okay...often we grow more from our mistakes than all the successes.

Now Zeba don't go trying to be a flashy talker...I talk this way because I've lived all over the world and this is what you get after all of those experiences trying to please everybody. You finally come to the conclusion that you haven't gained much trying to please everyone else so you might as well spend the last few years of your life being yourself and dieing HAPPY!!!

If there is anything at all I can do for you please just shoot me an email, slide me your number and I'll give you 1 FREE HOUR of my undivided attention, worth $1,000. People pay me more when I come out to speak but since you'll be doing most of the talking so that I can share just small suttle pieces of ideas I'll give you a free hour of my time and I'll pay for the call...I don't think you can beat that. And if I like you I'll serve you by giving you a couple of more free calls over the next 90 days. So it's on you Zeba if you feel I can help. I've been in sales as a consultant for over 20 years. Is there anything else I can do for you?
