I'm unclear what your question is.

Is this a student question? Is this a true or false question?

    What is your opinion?

Certainly either of the options is true in some cases. for example, a company might conduct market research, as a part of branding and marketing, should not be an attempt to shape opinion, but to understand opinions. The information should flow from the market (e.g. customers) to the company.

But in other cases, such as the promotion of highly innovative products, marketing will seek to educate and to influence opinion, the information flowing from the company to the market.

Sorry i saw this late.. Its a real question and i really wanted to know if its true that marketing shapes the consumer needs and wants. Or it is that marketing just reflects consumers needs and wants. Please help me to understand this with an example when explaining. And thank you Jay hamilton for your response has given me a clue...
