    Hi Klaun73,

Depending on their depth and experience, quite possibly neither although the advertising firm would typically have more experience in communications although as you know many firms cross-represent (over-represent?) themselves to get the new business.

Why aren't you looking at a marketing communications firm or a public relations firm that does MarCom? There are lots of specialized MarCom experts out there, post the project on the Hire an Expert board here if you want to see what is available.

    Hi Klaun73,

welcome aboard and thanks for posting your question.

I SAY GO WITH ADVERTISING FIRST...
based on my understanding of the two firms I would be willing to believe that an advertising firm would better solve the communication issues of a company because of it's in depth usage of communication to reach customers. Advertising firms not only need to understand what to communicate to a companies customers but also how a company communicates internally about the product or service. This communication can be in the form or print (magazines, newspapers and brochures), television, radio, internet or person to person. Is there anything else I can do for you Klaun73?

    Klaun 73,

    HELP...CLARIFY!

hearing some of my colleagues responses I would like to now open up this question a little more. For some reason your question juxtapositioned against the above answers appears NOW to be more vague.

So Klaun 73, what type of communication issues does the company have?

    Are they internal or external?

Are they visual, kinesthetic or audio communication problems?

This will make a difference and does reflect the three forms of communication styles that we use. Thanks for your input and I look forward to your reply.

    Hi Klaun73-

In my experience, true design firms usually are exactly that, designers who produce collateral materials. Ad agencies usually have designers, but also a communications or PR staff.

As stated above, the best thing you can do is research the company to find out what services they offer and what their background is. A design firm may call themselves that, but offer PR, media buying, and even marketing planning. Try to find someone who has experience in your field, so that they will already have the right contacts to make sure your communications get to the right people.

    Dear Klaun 73,

Thanks for replying to my question. Now that we have a better understanding that the communication issue is external we can move on. According to your input your small company has the following:

    1. Good products.
    2. Solid reputation
    3. Big potential (but unknown to the general public)

Question #1. Which is the best option for spreading the image of the company to all the country and maybe to other countries, to find new customers (dealers and final consumers of the product)?

    *DEREMIAH'S ANSWER:
This is really impossible to answer without knowing the reputation of the Design or Ad firm that we choose to work with. Every organization has a quality of work, level of expertise or speciality that we must measure. Depending upon the organization regardless of industry they could have all of those favorable qualities.

Question #2. Can a design firm handle all those issues?

    *DEREMIAH'S ANSWER:
Yes sure they can if they have the above attributes named.

Question #3. Can they (the small budding organization outlined above) grow to a more complex organization?

    *DEREMIAH'S ANSWER:
Sure they can. Every organization has the potential to expand and develop into a more complex entity depending upon the choices they make as a business. As a matter of fact it is only their choices that separate them from achieving this development.

Question #4. Can they handle and apply media buying, marketing planning, etc.. without becoming an ad firm?

    *DEREMIAH'S ANSWER:
Yes a good Design Firm can have all of the internal qualities to deal with the above without becoming an ad firm.

So the choices we all might make may just come down to how comfortable we feel about the Design or Ad Firms overall capabilities. I hope this clarifies and answers all of your questions Klaun 73. Thanks and please feel free to interject further if this evokes other concerns of yours. Is your company trying to decide based on a real business scenario whether to choose a Design firm or an Ad firm to expand their footprint worldwide?

Is there anything else I can do for you?

    Klaun 73,

I must say that I agree with terri nuechterlein. Ad firms normally quite naturally supply you with all of the needs you are looking for. Is your company trying to consider whether they want to remain a design firm and offer some of the attributes of an Ad firm? In other words Kalun 73 what's the motivation for your concerns and your question? This will help us speak directly to you in clear, concise and effective ways. Thanks for a great question.

    Klaun 73,

Talk to both kinds of firms but decide how you're going to measure. Advertising tends to measure awareness....I said tends, guys, not always....which does not always equate to more sales.

Design firms? Again, do you want people to say "wow that's really cool" or do you want them to bring your their business.

    Whoever does that, wins.

you awarded everyone you thanked points accept for me. Did you actually mean to do that on purpose or should I count it an error? (lol) Thanks.
