Are Models To Be Used For Advertising Or Not

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
i am promoting pearl jewellery under a brand name and my question is. Is it necessary or rather required while advertising i use a model wearing my pearl jewellery or just advertise only my product picture?

Some brands advertise with models and some do not.

    suneel_choudary,

So you already got an answer. For some companies it does make sense to show jewelry on models while for others not.It mostly depends on how you are positiong your products and what message you want to convey via your advertising. What brand values you want to enhance like the product itself, the lifestyle associated with it, feelings it arouses in people wearing it.

There are no hard and fast rules. You can't beat a good product shot, but on the other hand your jewellery might look fantastic on a model. If you are going to use a model, you need to use a great one. Which costs. Similarly if you are just shooting the product how do you shoot it to get the best from it? On a plain white background? On silk? In a jewellery box? Next to a glass of champagne? In a Ferrari or sowhere totally unexpected, like draped over a lizard or a cactus?(off the top of my head) Work out exactly what you want from your photography before you commision any, it will save you money! And use the best photographer you can find, even if they are the most expensive - it'll be money well spent. If you are serious about getting great shots ask to see their portfolio, it'll give you some ideas, and don't forget to ask them for suggestions BEFORE the shoot. Then give them the brief you want, and if possible be there when it's done. Good luck, have fun.

Horses for courses, teh advantage of showing the product in context (i.e. on a model) is that other women can picture what it might look like on them.

It depends upon the focus of your advertising campaign. You could have the pearls themselves as the story and not need models. When I went to Fiji last summer I visited a pearl farm. The story of how these pearls are made was fascinating. You could tell this story and show the pearls by themselves and the beautiful jewelry.

You could even make pearl a character and tell his/her story. The adventures of Pearly from birth to a strand of pearls or earrings. This could be cute and clever.

There are so many creative options available without using models. It's a matter of brainstorming and asking what kind of story do we want to tell.

Who is the target audience? If it's wholesalers, then you probably don't need a model. If it's consumers/end-users, then you probably do.

That's not to say that one approach is always right or wrong for each audience. It's rather to say that the decision should be based on the needs of the target audience.

More important than the model versus no-model issue is the question of your message or positioning, and the arresting and memorable advertising copy you'll want. (Copy in this case includes the visuals.)

If you have a really compelling positioning promise, it may not matter whether there's a live model or not. And if you have a lousy positioning promise, it's not likely that model-or-not will solve your problem.
