So I Want To Work In Sports Marketing...

I am looking for some advice...I am currently working in the marketing field with a focus on PR & Media relations for a high end retail store with multiple locations. While I love what I do - Marketing - I am interested in pursuing a Marketing Position in some kind of sports field. Ideally wokring for a team, event (ie: x-games) or a venue. Any suggestions on courses, seminars, recruiters, that my be able to help or make me a more appealing candidate???

    The best thing you can do to prepare yourself for the sports marketing field is talk to people who are already there. I don't mean idle chit-chat, either.

    You need to develop a carefully thought-out discussion guide that will let you ask them all the things you want to know about that field: what they like and dislike about their work, what skills they believe are most important to success, how sports marketing differs from other kinds of marketing, how people in their industry typically get into the companies they work for, etc. You get the idea.

    Don't try to convince these people to hire you or even recommend you. Just ask the high-gain questions and listen carefully to their answers. If you do that, you'll essentially be doing the situation analysis that will lead you to the strategy that will let you market yourself to the people who count and get the job you want.

    Is it possible that you'll actually get one of those folks to pro-actively help you? Of course. But if you go into the process with that as your objective, it's not nearly as likely to happen. Just put on your market research hat and listen to what they tell you, analyze it, and use the information to develop your strategy.

That book has a number of specific actions you can take to help yourself -- from what you say in your resume, to how you research the companies for which you want to work, how you prepare for the interview, etc.

    If you're really serious about wanting to make the switch, you have a re-positioning project on your hands. You need to re-position yourself (the product) to your new target audience (prospective employers in sports marketing). You'll need to identify the things you've done that are directly transferable to sports marketing, and you'll need to demonstrate that you have a plan for learning the things you haven't done.

    Get your marketing strategy right before you go off and take seminars, send out resumes, contact recruiters, etc. Those are all tactics. If you don't have a strategy, it's just a scatter-shot approach that isn't likely to work very well.
