    Search Engine Marketing: The entire process of using search engines to drive traffic to your Web page(s), a part of which is search engine optimization. However, search engine marketing does not end with optimization. Far from it. There is also considerable "off page" work to be done, primarily with respect to inbound links.

    I have an addition: SEM is also commonly, yet mistakenly, used to describe Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising.
