Career Opportunity For Hospital Administrator

Posted byMushfique Manzooron 500 Points
I am asking this question for my father.

My father is a Hospital Administrator. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital Administration from Academy of Health Science, US Army, Fort Sam Houston, Texas (1984) and an MBBS (Bachelors of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery) from Dhaka Medical College under Dhaka University (1966) (recognized by UK RCPS). He had worked in the then Pakistan Army and thereafter in Bangladesh Army and retired as a Brigadier General in 2000 as the Director of Medical Services in Bangladesh Army. He has run numerous military hospitals (ranging from 200 beds to 1000 beds) and field medical units during his long career in military medical corps.

After his retirement from military after 33 years, he had been the Chief Operating Officer of a general hospital in Dhaka for 2 years and for the last 3 years he, as Advisor, Administration and Project Head, had set up and been running a state-of-the-art Cardiac Hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He had been working on this project from its inception and today this Heart Hospital has become one of the most successful in Bangladesh.

Recently he along with my other family members (but not me) has become a Resident Alien in US (holding a Green Card). He wants to settle in NY area as most of my extended family and his friends live there and is looking for a job in Hospital Administration field in NY area.

As you all can understand he is senior citizen of 62 years, I am wondering whether it is possible for him to get a job in his field in NY area. I would really appreciate if my colleagues advice me on this issue. Any help in guiding me in locating job sites or head-hunting/job placement firms in NY area for this purpose is welcome.

I suspect posting a resume on monster.com or any of the other job sites will be a waste of time. I think a better approach might be to see if he can secure an appointment with a hospital administrator in the NY area to get some advice and direction.

If he can get just one person to help him get the lay of the land, he'll know whether there's a decent shot at the kind of position he wants. He may also learn of other, related opportunities ... like companies selling to the administrators, private clinics that need professional management, etc.

另一个起点可能是在大学/ teaching hospital, where the chief administrator usually knows about lots of opportunities at affiliated hospitals or other facilities. I'm thinking of Columbia University, Yale (in New Haven, CT), Cornell Medical Center, etc.

Good luck. (If your dad is going to be in Fairfield County, Connecticut, let me know and we can at least have a cup of coffee together.)

I am sure that one of the many big pharma global enterprises in the NY/NJ area would welcome his experience in healthcare delivery in other parts of the world. A consultancy may be an option, and if he has relationships with any sales reps from Bangladesh who called on him there, I would press them for a referral to their corporate HQ. It might not be a permanent position, but would get him by and help out till he landed in the desired role.

Thanks a lot to Gaynelle, Paul and Jamie

Gaynelle, i have already looked into Heydrick & Struggles and will also look into other firms according to the list you provided.

Paul, thanks a lot for jobsites. Also it was good to hear that age is not a bar.

Jamie, thanks for your idea and point of view. will keep that in mind.

To Gaynelle and Paul: of all the links you have provided, what would be the first thing to do? seek advice from Korn/Ferry, Heydrick & Struggles, submit resume to them for advice (thru' email) and then submit resume to other healthcare related job sites??

    waiting for your advice people.
